I realise this is a long shot, but figured I'd make an enquiry anyway.
A Canadian associate of mine is considering coming to Edinburgh between 14-20 August - right in the middle of the Festival madness, naturally! Hotels are usually booked up well before now, and the few that are left are prohibitively expensive. I'd let him stay at my place but it's my son's first birthday celebrations and my small flat will already be stuffed to bursting!
So...does anyone have, or know of a room he might rent out for the time he's considering? Or any tips on cheap hotels/hostels/apartments that might be of use? He's happy to stay anywhere so long as it's reasonably quiet and he doesn't have to actually share the room. I can vouch for the guy being very pleasant, sensible and personable - he's an older professor at a reputable Canadian university, and a really interesting, nice person.
Any ideas would be well appreciated!
Thanks,
Gill x

Finncon is fini. Parris and I have just staggereed back to our hotel room from the dead reindeer party. The party is still going strong and we would love to have stayed longer... till sunset, at least... but we have to be up early tomorrow to catch a ferry to Estonia, where I'll be doing a signing in Tallinn. Then the next day it's back across the sea to Helsinki again, just long enough to set off for Turku, where I've got another signing.
Finncon was terrific. The warmth and hospitality we've found here has completely ruined my image of Finland as a frozen wasteland. Who knew? The sauna was fun too. And then there were all the cute anime girls in costume offering free hugs...
Thanks to all my Finnish friends. Now off to Estonia!

Palookaville is on tv; remember when Vincent Gallo seemed like a promising indie actor with a strangely attractive face, and not a pretentious egocentric who's way too in love with his penis and looks like there isn't a free slot for "showering" in his schedule? Yeah.
I wonder why, after weeks of deafening creative silence, the moment I decide to hurry up and do something with my assignments, my mind starts producing ideas (of course none of them work related) that I'm dying to work on. Oh, and there's the
asoiaf_exchange assignment too! *facepalms*
I want to days to be, huh, 50 hours long or something. Except that I'd still waste most of them.
ETA: My father, who's exercising in the other room: Keep in mind the number 23, I might ask you about it later.
Me: it's a Lost number.
Father: well yeah, but it's unrelated.
Me: HA! You believe it's unrelated.
*BWOOOOONNNNNNG*

Just to let people know there has been a huge fire at the Balmoral Bar on Dalry road...unfortunately a fireman has lost his life and another has been injured, I think the fire is still going on and all of Dalry road is cordoned off from Haymarket to the Gorgie Rd junction so adjust your travel plans accordingly.

Do you love Supernatural and want to see your or your vidding friends' efforts all in one place?
Well, head on over (and send your friends) to the Request Post for the Fourth Annual WinchesterCon Vid Show.
We've had amazing shows year after year, and I can hardly wait to see what people do with the latest footage.
The Con is in Denver this year, October 9-11, 2009, and we're really excited about it! If you've never gone, you should really consider attending. It's absolute blast -- by the fans, for the fans, it's a huge pajama party with all of your favorite people. Let me know if you want more information, and you can check out the official Con Comm
winchestercon for details as well.
But, in the meantime, get those vids started. Deadline isn't for another two months, and each vidder is allowed to submit up to three entries. I just know this is going to be the best year ever!

Just got back from the little Ren Faire our town has every year. It's cute, and the ECS peeps were there, so we hung out. Going to a little party tonight around 9.
I bought this really neat silver scorpion pendant, which was cast from a real scorpion. It's awesome, caught my eye right away. I have a little thing for scorpions lately... they are pointy and poisonous, like rogues. ;) When Sid, Chad and Mer were here for the 4th, they brought me a lollipop with a real scorpion in it. The scorpion itself was so small, that I really didn't taste much of the chewy bits. Just was mostly crunchy exoskeleton. Mmm, bugs.
Anyways, saw the bellydance crew at the Faire. Decided to take up classes again, because dammit, I really miss dancing. I'm just probably going to stay at beginner level for a long time, really take it easy... and if I go to any performances, I will only be there for flavor. ;) But I have really gotten out of shape. I feel a bit too squishy. I miss the tone I had when I was dancing. Hopefully I can gain that back. Next classes start on the 21st, and I'm really looking forward to it.
What else, what else...
Did an almost full guild run of Naxx 10 last night just for the hell of it. A few people still need gear from there, and so we got two folks from Fury Unbridled to round out our dps. It was very fun and laid back. I was so relaxed, the Heigan fight seemed almost in slow motion. We got the Safety Dance achievement (no one died). Fully cleared Naxx in a little under 5 hrs at a casual pace with a few breaks, one shotting every boss. Probably will try to do 10 mans every Fri if we can fill out the few missing spots when guildies can't make it. I have a million Emblems of Heroism, which I keep using to buy cheat shoulders for my alts. I'm bad at leveling alts, but I have my gaggle of man-belfs, so they all get leveling shoulders.
Got a Naxx 25 tonight. Hopefully it will be over by 9. Signed up for Ulduar 25 for tomorrow, but don't know if I'm in yet.
Edit: Blargh! No Naxx25 for me. My frame rate was constantly at 5, so it made it REALLY hard to do anything. I just go mainly for fun anyways, since I like some of the people that go, so I'm just missing out on giggling at vent, not loots. I'm doing a full scan of my computer, I must have picked something up somewhere. Very glad I have an authenticator for my WoW account.
Commission list is almost done. I'm taking a slight break to try to do some stuff for myself (and a trade I owe). I really need to get back into sculpting.
My bellybutton piercing is sore. I don't know why. It's a few years old now (3 or 4), and has never been sore before. I think maybe it was sitting weird while I was sleeping (I had a dangley one in... it has a monkey eating a banana on it. I usually wear that one all the time) and maybe pulled on it too much, making it unhappy. Hopefully it will feel better, I changed back to an undangley one.
Anyways... *toddles off*

I am looking for a graduated flexible ruler like this one
( Magic Curve )
I have looked online but the delivery charges I have been quoted are huge and I was hoping someone on here might know of a shop in Edinburgh that had one in stock or could order one in for me.
Thanks!

I'm trying to import one specific .avi file (Xvid MPEG-4 codec, the same as all the other files that have imported fine so far) but it doesn't import correctly. Placed on the time line there is the full audio for the file but only the first 30 or so seconds of video. Removing loop, making the video portion longer doesn't do anything, it seems like there really is only 30 seconds of video there. The file plays normally for the entire 40 minutes in Windows Media Player though. The only other thing that's different with this file is that when I place it on the time line it puts the audio on too, when I place my other avi files on the time line it doesn't add an audio track for the video.
Any ideas what might be the problem or possible workarounds?
ETA: Problem solved by stripping audio off .avi file in VirtualDub
